Mikey Madison and Kirsten Dunst are set to star in a new movie called Reptilia. Set in Florida, the movie follows the story of a mermaid who falls in love with a human.
The release date has not been announced yet as it is still in pre-production, but filming is expected to start at some point in the fall. Mikey Madison is coming off her Best Actress Oscar win for her work in Anora. Now, it looks like she’s looking to branch out a little bit with her new role in Reptilia.
Reptilia is Hitting the Market at the Right Time
This is set to be a unique thriller. It follows the story of a dental hygienist who ends up being lured into the underworld of the exotic animal trade. Director Alejandro Landes Echavarria is working on the script, and he didn’t work on it alone either, as he co-wrote it with Duke Merriman.
In an era where vampires and mummies are coming back, Reptilia is certainly coming at the right time. Other movies about mermaids have experienced huge success as well, especially if you look at Undine. This movie had a wide release in 2021 and follows the story of a historian who breaks up with his long-term girlfriend. She then decides to seek vengeance by taking revenge on him before returning to the water, where she belongs.
Mermaid is another take on the myths of mermaids, where a Florida man finds a wounded mermaid and is then tasked to protect her at all costs. Even in gaming, mermaids are a big theme, with The Sims 4 allowing you to actually become a mermaid.
Even casino UK games like Mermaid’s Treasure Trove are often featured on sites due to the theme being so popular. With icons that range from clams to treasure chests and underwater crowns studded with jewels, it pays homage to the allure of mermaids and the way they are represented in media.
What’s interesting, however, is that titles like Reptilia instead focus on the darker turn that mermaids can take. They are portrayed as lustful creatures that often resort to violence to get their own way. From what we know, it’s entirely possible this movie could be similar to Siren.
What We Know about the New Movie
Although the details of this movie are being kept very much under wraps, we do know that Imperative Entertainment are going to be working on it. It is also going to be produced by Pastel and AF Films.
They are working alongside Landes Echavarria to make sure that they nail the production and the overall theme of the movie. Black Bear is financing the film and has worked on a large number of movies in the past. Some of them include The Imitation Game as well as Mudbound. They also provided the financing for titles like Immaculate, which is a horror, but covers a very different theme from Reptilia.
We also don’t know what form the mermaid in the movie is going to take. Many fans are speculating that we could see a hybrid creature that has more reptilian features, rather than a stereotypical representation of a mermaid, especially given the title of the movie.
