Having seen this film at least five times, I’m only now coming to terms with its brilliance…

This magnum opus from Kurt Russell’s heyday reminds one of a time when movies existed seemingly for their own sake; rather than a line in a ledger, they were works of art instead of an appeal for relevance, or a “statement”.

When I heard John Schlesinger (Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd)  was making a film of  Nathanael West’s novel I wasn’t surprised. Not after the 1967 adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses

It shouldn’t surprise you in the least that a movie featuring next to zero plot, Russian mobsters, and an unkillable retired assassin murdering everyone was written by the same guy (Derek Kolstad)

Sort of like the Wildfire team Crichton  cooked up for The Andromeda Strain. You know, to deal with outer space alien space virus. 

That War of the Worlds exists at all is a miracle of the modern age, though it becomes less so as you examine the details of its birth. You see, this is an Amazon production. Amazon Prime, to be precise.
