I will never know for certain how I would have reacted to this film had I remained ignorant of its payoff, but having the information allowed me to understand exactly why it failed.

Once again, it is easy to become enveloped in this world as it plays out as it must, without tidy resolutions or soothing homilies.

A film so appallingly ridiculous on its face that it should come as no surprise that it survives its journey from madness to sublime entertainment fully intact.

While a large part of me mourns the loss of the more “personal” Scorsese from decades past, the transition has done nothing to diminish his storytelling ability…

As usual, Kurosawa lets us in gradually, through an examination of pained ritual and bursts of spontaneity that are invariably punished.

Beautiful boredom…
